Eating Yogurt For Acne – Will It Clear You Up Or Break You Out?

Are you sick and tired of wasting money on ways to treat your acne?  If so, you might think about a cheaper and more convenient way to treat acne outbreaks.  One method that some acne sufferers have found to be effective in the treatment of acne is eating yogurt.  Not only is it cheap to buy, and easy to obtain but it also leaves your complexion looking wonderful and leaves your skin smelling good too.

What causes acne?

Acne occurs when a hair follicle becomes blocked or clogged with dead skin and oil.  Hormonal changes cause an excess production of oil to occur and it then becomes difficult for it all to reach the surface, so some of it becomes clogged and then causes acne breakouts.  Sometimes if bacteria becomes trapped in with the oil it can result in inflammation.

How does yogurt help acne?

Yogurt helps fight acne because it contains many vitamins and minerals that help to boost the immune system and help your body and face fight off illness and bacteria.  Eating yogurt destroys bacteria from inside the pores and since it is naturally acidic it draws oil out of the skin’s surface.  When you eat yogurt, it gives your complexion many of the numerous vitamins and minerals that you have just consumed, such as zinc and vitamin B.  These are important in treating acne and keeping your immune system up to par.

The active cultures that are in yogurt are called probiotics.  These probiotics help keep our skin feeling smooth and soft.  Eating yogurt can help prevent breakouts from occurring because the probiotics help allow the digestive system to function properly and utilize the nutrition that it absorbs properly.

Are there any other ways yogurt can be used to treat acne?

If you don’t really care for yogurt, there are other ways to use it as an acne treatment other than eating it.  For instance, some have suggested that using it as a facial mask has been quite effective in the treatment of acne.  Get a container of plain yogurt and then chop up some fruits like strawberries, oranges and cucumbers, to mix in with the yogurt.  After you mix them all together, apply the yogurt mask to your face using a cotton ball.  Place it more thickly onto the outbreaks that are on your skin and allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes before removing it.  After it has sat for at least ten minutes, rinse it off.  Another way some people use it as a facial mask is to mix plain yogurt with honey and leave it on for 10-20 minutes after applying to the skin, then rinse it off.

Important things to keep in mind

Something that is important to keep in mind is that yogurt does not work for everyone when treating acne.  Although it has been proven to be quite effective in the treatment and prevention of acne outbreaks, it does not always work for everyone.  Certain people may have certain cases of acne that are more severe and need a different type of treatment or plan for prevention.  This is why it is so important to always discuss your acne problems with a dermatologist so that they can help lend their advice and expertise on the matter and help pair you with the proper treatment method that will work best for you and your acne type.  Untreated acne can result in permanent damage and scarring of the skin, which can lead to depression and low self esteem.  So talk to your dermatologist today.
