Is It Bad To Pop Pimples?

We’ve all been there before.  You wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and are shocked at what you see!  There in the reflection is a big nasty zit staring you square in the face.  Your first instinct is probably to pop it.  It is always so tempting.  However you should try and avoid this at all costs.

Why is it bad?

Popping pimples may seem to temporarily make appearance a little less noticeable however in the long run it causes serious damage to the skin.  When you pop a pimple you are leaving your skin exposed to all kinds of bacteria that can enter it and make your skin become irritated causing new acne to form and become worse.  Not only this but you could also cause your acne to scar by picking at it.  Acne scars can be hard to heal and some never go away completely, even after treatment.

Popping pimples can also lead to further and more severe complications.  For instance, squeezing or popping pimples sometimes causes nodules or cysts (hard, painful blemishes deep within the skin) to form.  Nodules and/or cysts are the most serious type of acne that a person can have.  Cysts must be treated by a physician and many times can be very painful and uncomfortable.

Things to know

If you have acne it should never be left untreated, ad it should never be popped.  Doing so can prolong acne cases and make it harder to treat and prevent.  If your acne is giving your problems it is best to talk to a dermatologist so that they can diagnose you and your acne and prescribe you the proper medications and or treatment options.  They will base everything of of what kind of skin type you have, how bad your acne is, etc.

Myths about popping pimples

Just because you scrape the nasty stuff out of the pore opening when you pop it doesn’t mean that it won’t damage your skin, because chances are that it will still become clogged with bacteria and spread further acne as infected material can still enter the dermis from below.

What to do instead of picking

If you are tempted to pick at your pimples, don’t!  Keep your hands away from your acne and remember that even though it may make them less noticeable for now, that in the long run you are preventing further infection and more severe complications as well as acne scarring.  If your acne is hindering your life and you can’t seem to get clear skin then make an appointment to see a dermatologist.  The dermatologist can diagnose your acne and get you started on an effective treatment as well as come up with some sort of prevention plan.

Acne can be a real pain, literally a pain if it becomes a more severe case such as cystic acne.  Take the first step in healing your acne today by finding a treatment that is right for you!  You will be glad that you did, and your skin will thank you!
