Using Hydrogen Peroxide for the Treatment of Acne

Many claim hydrogen peroxide can do everything from whiten teeth to sanitize hands to deodorize one’s underarms.  Probably because it has been around so long people have tried hydrogen peroxide for just about everything.  So one may ask, what does it do for acne?

The Sam’s Club Gold Standard Drug Site does state one should not use hydrogen peroxide on an abscess.  Thus if one has already done some “creative” treatments to a blemish he or she may not want to add hydrogen peroxide into the mix.  The outcome may be a deeper infection which will force the person to go to the doctor for some serious treatment.

If one has not made the many (and many being the keyword) blemishes worse and is utilizing hydrogen peroxide sparingly he or she may find good results.  He or she should also make sure the facial skin is not sensitive or prone to dryness, as the hydrogen peroxide will definitely dry out any skin it touches.

The main recommendations for treatment are to clean the face prior to applying the hydrogen peroxide.  Pat the face dry then with either a q-tip or cotton ball, one should sparingly dab the hydrogen peroxide to the areas of acne.  Again if he or she only has one or two blemishes this may not be the right treatment.  Once the hydrogen peroxide has dried, he or she should then apply moisturizer to the face, as to protect the surrounding skin from being effected.

As with other acne treatments it would be wise to test hydrogen peroxide on a very small sample of the face, as he or she will not know what his or her skin will do until the product has been utilized.

Again if one is not sure the blemish is suitable for hydrogen peroxide, being he or she tried to pop it and left it a bloody mess or other circumstances apply, check with a doctor or pharmacist prior to trying hydrogen peroxide.
